Newport Public Library Board

Meeting Minutes

Wednesday July 18, 2007

Present: Wyma Rogers, Carol Fisher, Carol Ruggeri, Curt Fewkes, Cindy McConnell, Kay Eldon

Carol Ruggeri called the meeting to order at 5:20 pm.

Cindy asked if the No Smoking ban was working and Wyma reported that it was working very well.

Minutes:  Minutes from the last meeting were approved

Librarian’s Report(see attached) Wyma clarified that the number of children registered for the Summer Reading Program was not the same as the number of children who attend the Wednesday afternoon events.  Children do not have to register to come to the events, and children who are registered do not necessarily attend the events.  However, the numbers for both attendees and those registered are up again this year.  Carol Ruggeri gave a report on Literacy Park based on her Rotary Club Board meeting.  Carol said that a boulder has been chosen for the plaque and the sculpture will go next to it.  (Wyma informed the Board that the donor has agreed to leave the sculpture in the Library’s front area and donate a second sculpture for Literacy Park).  Carol also reported that Road and Driveway will donate labor and materials for the paved walkway in the park and also that a railing was on order.  A formal Dedication Ceremony will take place in September.

Wyma mentioned that Lit Flicks will start in September with “The Color Purple”.  She reported that Allen O’Neal knows a literature professor, Luellen Huntley, from North Carolina whose family farm was used as a film set for “The Color Purple”, and on Allen’s suggestion the Library has arranged to fly Ms. Huntley to Oregon.  She will be doing a presentation at Newport Library.

Policy changes: Cindy moved to accept the changes to 2.1.2 and Carol Fisher seconded.  All present voted in favor.  The approved wording is below.

ORS 192.502 allows library records of patron name linked with address, phone number, or email to be exempted from public records disclosure.  Newport Public Library will not disclose such patron registration information except in an urgent matter of health or safety, or unless the public interest requires disclosure in the particular instance, as determined following public records law procedure or as required by court order.

Other Business: Carol Fisher brought up the issue of the heat and stuffiness of the library during warm weather.  She recommended some kind of modifications to the library to make it more comfortable.  Wyma said the library could buy more fans, and that she will find out how much it would coast for a building review.  Wyma also said she would have the HVAC people come down and check the system.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:56 pm.
