Newport Library Review of Goals 2006-2007

Card for Every Child

This program which reaches out to children in the 2nd grade, continues to be a success.  104 new library cards issued during this year’s drive, and schools have worked the program into their curricula.

Card for Everybody

The library’s goal was not only to reach out to specific groups within the community, but to simultaneously improve services to them.

FISHING COMMUNITY  Service was improved: $1000 worth of items were bought for the library collection and a special circulating collection founded at Englund’s.  A bibliography of library items was created.  No real data on how many fishermen are using service, but word is getting out and feedback is good.

CITY EMPLOYEES Under 10 new cards resulted from this drive.  Consciousness of library service was raised among city employees, and applications included in all new employee packets.

Collection Development

The goal was to streamline the process and open it to staff participation.  Kay continues to find her way in this role.  She is ordering books online and seeking a new vendor for lease books.  She also encourages other staff members to take part by recommending books, reading journals, and adopting sections of the collections.

NEWPORT READS!

The program was an enormous success in its second year.  Far more circulation and participation than the first year which was also successful.  Staff hours amounted to about 250.  Zorro items circulated over 500 times at NPL alone.

Bridges to literacy

The focus of this joint library/schools project was math and science.  Popular author David Schwartz spoke in schools and at the library; the program also brought OMSI to the schools.  The library seized the opportunity to bring YA sci-fi/fantasy author Tamora Pierce to the schools and library.  No grant funding this year; paid by anonymous donor.

Library Garden

Everyone agrees that the garden space in front of the library, with the new lawn, paver path and plantings is an enormous improvement over the impenetrable weed-infested affliction that was before.  A bench and some new bulbs are on the way.

Literacy Park

The library goal was to support Rotary in its renovation of yet another affliction, the former Green-Thumb Park.  The Library Foundation donated $6,000 toward lighting the park.  Although some paving is still to be accomplished, the park is ready for library programs.  The library staff and/or Foundation have an opportunity to lead the planning for the Grand Opening in September.
